UC Libraries and Center for Asian Studies welcome a new book collection donated by the Read Japan Project

A list of 76 titles was added to the UC library catalog thanks to a generous donation by the Tokyo Foundation and the Nippon Foundation through their Read Japan project. The books include manga, literature from the classical to the contemporary period, and a variety of research collections and monographs about Japan.

In a welcoming ceremony this past Thursday, Marcela Rivera, subdirector of Information and Archives Resources, thanked the donors and described the process involved in the application, acquisition, and cataloguing of the new materials. Dr. Berenice Ramos from the Institute of Aesthetics highlighted a series of novels present in the new collection, and Dr. Camila Gutiérrez from College and the School of Communications introduced three research collections to be included as primary bibliography in a doctoral seminar as soon as the coming semester.

Some of the titles discussed during the event include Hiromi Kawakami’s Strange Weather in Tokyo; Yoko Ogawa’s The Memory Police; and Jessamyn Abel’s Dream Super-Express: A Cultural History of the World’s First Bullet Train.

The event was attended by members of the UC community and the general public. The Nippon Club, a group of local and international undergraduate students, commented with enthusiasm about the variety of materials present, including language textbooks and art catalogs. TUC holders were able to check out books at the library counter and begin reading them right away.
